UK Seizes Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tanker, Putin Threatens Retaliation


In a surprise operation late last week, the UK’s Armed Forces seized the oil tanker MT Smyrtos—registered under Ukrainian colours but owned by Russian entities—off the coast of Weymouth. Royal Marine commandos boarded the vessel, cited a breach of international sanctions, and secured control for subsequent legal proceedings.


The seizure is part of a larger effort by the United Kingdom, the European Union and other Western states to neutralise Russia’s “shadow fleet”, a network of more than 700 vessels believed to transport the bulk of the country’s sanctioned oil. The Ministry of Defence estimates that this fleet carries around 75 % of the Kremlin’s illicit energy flows, which the UK says fuels Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.


President Vladimir Putin responded to the seizure with an ominous warning. In a televised address, he denounced Western “piracy” and threatened retaliation “in kind”. He added that the threat would not be limited to the English Channel, but could be enacted “wherever we deem it necessary”.
