WASHINGTON (FluxDaily) — In a significant phone call on Monday, President Donald Trump engaged with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss crucial topics including trade relations, Taiwan's sovereignty, and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. This communication follows their face-to-face meeting last month in Busan, South Korea.
During the call, Xi stated that Taiwan's return to mainland China is a critical aspect of the post-war international order, according to statements from the Chinese foreign ministry, emphasizing the longstanding tensions surrounding Taiwan.
While a White House official confirmed the call took place, they did not disclose specifics about the conversation, heightening intrigue surrounding the U.S.-China relationship.
Notably, just prior to this call, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that Japan would consider military involvement if China were to act against Taiwan. This pronouncement has further strained China-Japan relations, creating an atmosphere of tension in East Asia.
In response to Takaichi's comments, Beijing condemned the remarks, prompting concerns over the stability of the region. Xi also mentioned that China and the U.S. should work together to safeguard the victory of World War II while the U.S. has maintained a position of strategic ambiguity regarding potential military support for Taiwan.
Earlier this month, Taiwan announced it had received official notification about a $330 million arms sale approved by the Trump administration, which included parts for fighter jets. This provoked strong protests from Beijing, claiming such actions violate the one-China principle.
While trade was a topic of discussion, specifics on new agreements or purchasing arrangements—like American soybeans—were not revealed. Despite the complexities, Xi indicated that the relationship should strive for more positive progress following the summit in Busan.
Lastly, both leaders touched upon the Ukraine crisis, with Xi advocating for a resolution that addresses the fundamental issues at play.
