Trump Evades Air Force One; Cabinet Remains on Decoy Flight
On 8 July, President Donald Trump slipped from the aircraft bearing the iconic pink and white Air Force One livery, while senior White House officials Marco Rubio and Scott Bessent stayed aboard the same plane, which the military kept under the presidential call sign to act as a decoy.
The operation came after growing concerns about air‑space security linked to a tense engagement with Iran. Trump secured a clandestine exit via a catering tractor that ferried him onto a secure military airframe, avoiding detection by hostile intelligence.
Preserving the line of succession is a key reason the cabinet remained on the initial aircraft. In the hypothetical scenario that a sitting president is incapacitated or dies, Vice‑President JD Vance, Speaker of the House, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Secretary of State, and Treasury Secretary would each move up in turn.
Other senior White House staff, including Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Communications Director Steven Cheung, continued aboard the decoy. The White House has not yet issued an official statement about the maneuver.
