US President Donald Trump has said he is ordering a total and complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers going into and out of Venezuela.
In a post on Truth Social, he stated that Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro's government had been designated a foreign terrorist organization, accusing it of stealing US assets along with engaging in terrorism, drug smuggling, and human trafficking.
Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela, he added.
Trump's remarks followed a week after the US seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Venezuela has yet to respond to Trump's comments.
In his post, Trump claimed Venezuela was completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America and warned that it would only get bigger, asserting it would be unprecedented.
He accused Maduro's regime of utilizing stolen oil to finance drug terrorism, human trafficking, murder, and kidnapping.
The Trump administration has consistently accused Venezuela of drug smuggling, with recent military strikes resulting in the deaths of over 90 individuals believed to be transporting illegal drugs to the US.
In response to these ongoing tensions, the US has heightened its military presence in the Caribbean Sea, reinforcing naval capabilities and positioning warships in proximity to Venezuela.
The US policy toward Maduro's government has been one of continued opposition under both Trump and President Joe Biden, emphasizing sustained sanctions aimed at pressuring the administration out of power.
Fresh sanctions were recently imposed on additional ships allegedly engaging in trading Venezuelan oil and on individuals connected to Maduro's government.
Venezuela, home to one of the world's largest oil reserves, has alleged that Washington seeks to appropriate its resources.
The geopolitical landscape surrounding oil exports from Venezuela remains fraught as actions from both the US and Venezuela continue to escalate.
