At least 39 people have died and dozens more have been injured after two high-speed trains collided near Córdoba, as confirmed by the Spanish Civil Guard.

Dubbed the worst rail crash in Spain in over a decade by local authorities, the accident occurred around 19:45 local time on a Sunday evening. One train, which had just departed Málaga for Madrid, derailed and crossed onto an opposing track, colliding head-on with another train that was traveling from Madrid to Huelva.

The crash has puzzled officials, with Transport Minister Óscar Puente noting that railway experts are baffled by the circumstances leading to the collision. An investigation has been initiated, though results may take at least a month.

Rescue operations are currently ongoing, with approximately 400 people aboard the two trains at the time of the collision. The situation is complicated by the destructive nature of the crash, which has left some carriages twisted beyond recognition. Local emergency services report that they are still working to determine if there are additional victims trapped within the wreckage.

As of now, 112 individuals have received medical assistance, with 48 hospitalized, including five minors—one of whom is in intensive care. The death toll may rise as investigations proceed and the identification of victims continues.
