TUBA CITY, Ariz. — An 8-year-old girl who went missing on tribal lands in northern Arizona was found dead Friday, authorities reported. Maleeka Boone was last seen Thursday evening in the Coalmine Canyon area, approximately 240 miles north of Phoenix.

The FBI, which is working alongside tribal police, has refrained from providing further details regarding the circumstances of her death. A spokesperson for Navajo Police indicated that no additional information is currently available.

In a heartfelt social media video, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren mourned the loss, stating, 'This tragedy weighs heavy on my heart.' Maleeka's disappearance prompted the issuance of a Turquoise Alert, a specific system aimed at locating missing Native Americans.

The Turquoise Alert system follows the enactment of legislation known as 'Emily’s Law,' named after Emily Pike, whose remains were discovered in February, significantly sparking discussions around the alarming rates of disappearances and violent deaths within Native American communities. The awareness surrounding these issues has intensified, leading to legislative efforts aimed at protecting Indigenous individuals.
