Thai Monks Under Scrutiny: Monk Arrested Amid $3M Embezzlement Rumors
Thai police have taken a senior Buddhist monk into custody on suspicion of embezzling $3 million from his monastery over a two‑year period. The former abbot, Phra Wachirayan Wi of Wat Phutthaisawan in historic Ayutthaya, allegedly siphoned more than 100 million baht from donations on over 20 occasions.
In keeping with monastic vows, monks take a lifetime of celibacy and renounce personal wealth. After the arrest, Phra Wachirayan was defrocked and remains silent in public forums.
The arrest comes a year after a sweeping scandal that saw senior monks accused of sex and blackmail. The same woman, identified as 47‑year‑old Punyavee Rungrueang, was alleged to have collaborated with the monk in laundering the stolen money. She faces charges of aiding a state official in illicit activity.
During the raid on Phra Wachirayan’s home, police seized cash, gold bars, jewelry and 35 gold amulets estimated to be worth 6 million baht. Surveillance footage captured a private moment between the monk and the woman on a dining table.
Investigators revealed that donation receipts issued by the monk benefited two streams – one for temple upgrades and another for amulets. Yet neither stream ever entered the temple’s bank account.
Officials say the case began after an anonymous tip in July pointing to misuse of temple funds. Police suspect additional individuals may be involved, and a thorough probe is ongoing.
