The head of Tennessee's prison system, Commissioner Frank Strada, will step down following the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike on Wednesday.

Governor Bill Lee announced the resignation on Saturday, saying it was in the best interests of the state amid scrutiny over the botched lethal‑injection attempt, which left Pike in critical condition in a hospital.

Strada said the investigation into the incident is “entirely appropriate and necessary” and that his departure would support that process. Pike had been sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer.

Lawyers for Pike are seeking to commute her sentence, while the Missouri Department of Corrections has opened an inquiry into the state's execution protocols. The incident has reignited debate over capital punishment and the safety of lethal‑injection methods in the southern United States.
