In brief

In September, the execution of convicted murderer Christa Pike at Riverbend Prison went awry when lethal injections failed to kill her, forcing her to be transported to a hospital. Emergency call recordings show confusion among prison staff and responders, with initial calls being misidentified and delayed verification of the situation. Pike was ultimately discharged after a lengthy recovery, but the incident has halted remaining executions in Tennessee for the year and prompted the resignation of the state corrections head. Legal teams are debating whether Pike will face a second execution, while her advocates push for a commutation to life without parole.

The Botched Execution

In Tennessee, convicted murderer Christa Pike was scheduled for lethal injection on 30 September. She received two doses of pentobarbital, yet the injections apparently did not reach her bloodstream in the necessary amount, leaving her alive and needing transport to a local hospital.

Emergency Call Confusion

Audio recordings released by the Nashville Banner reveal that the first emergency call from Riverbend Prison, made at 20:40 local time, was rejected by responders because the caller could not be verified. The caller claimed that "we’ve been carrying out an execution tonight" and that the inmate was not yet deceased, but the call was not immediately trusted.

Central command at the prison contradicted this initial call, stating 21:07 that it had not been made and would have been the one to place the call. It was not until 21:11 that officials confirmed the authenticity of the earlier message, allowing emergency fire crews to pass through the gates.

A later call at 21:34, captured while Pike was being moved to a hospital, showed medics acknowledging the chaos and requesting clear communication with the prison about her whereabouts.

Aftermath and Legal Response

Pike was discharged from hospital care after showing signs of recovery, though her legal team warns she faces a "long road to recovery". She may become the only inmate worldwide to survive an execution attempt by lethal injection.

The incident has prompted an investigation into the execution protocol and the resignation of Tennessee’s corrections chief. Governor Bill Lee has suspended all executions for the remainder of the year, and debates continue about whether Pike will be tried again or granted a commutation to life in prison without parole.

Related voices in the story include the mother of murdered victim Colleen Slemmer, who labeled the failed execution a “mess,” and Pike’s former partner Tadaryl Shipp, who remains imprisoned for his role in the 1995 crime, though he was spared the death penalty due to his age at the time of the offense.
