Initial investigations show the fire ignited on the second floor. Police called after midnight local time (22:00 GMT) and nearly 100 firefighters arrived, after a crane was needed to open the roof when a stairwell collapsed.

Five individuals remain unaccounted for, while 14 residents escaped the building, suffering from various injuries – two serious, two moderate and four minor. The victims were taken to hospitals in neighboring Chur, Ilanz and Zurich.

Both the Graubünden cantonal police and the public prosecutor’s office are probing the cause of the blaze. The Alpine region is a bustling holiday destination, known for winter sports and summer nature activities, and authorities are working to ensure the safety of locals and visitors alike.
