Steve Irwin’s Family Celebrates ‘Superhero’ Dad 20 Years After Shock Death

Bindi Irwin has marked the 20th anniversary of her father’s tragic death with a touching tribute over social media. The 28‑year‑old conservationist recalled how her dad was called a “superhero” on the platform Instagram.

Steve Irwin died on 4 September 2006, aged 44, after a stingray fatally pierced his chest while filming a documentary at the Great Barrier Reef.

Bindi said she had watched the world mourn her dad for two decades. “I always thought that my dad’s legacy is wildlife conservation; it turns out, his legacy is love. For our planet and for each other,” she wrote.

Terri Irwin tweeted a heartfelt interview wherein she reflected on Bindi’s birth and the moment her profession solidified through naming her “Bindi” after her favourite crocodile.

Robert Irwin also posted a tribute, sharing a childhood photo of their father with the caption, “Your legacy is forever.” His earlier win on Dancing with the Stars added another layer of family pride.

The Irwins continue stewardship of Australia Zoo, with Bindi leading conservation projects that echo her father’s legacy, reminding audiences that his spirit endures in every animal campaign and family bond.
