Sophia Laforteza Steps Away from KATSEYE Amid Rising Mental Health Concerns
Hollywood’s newest pop star is taking time off to reclaim her sense of self. The Filipino‑American vocalist of KATSEYE announced that she will temporarily leave the girl group, citing a need to prioritize her mental health.
Her announcement follows the same trajectory as fellow member Manon Bannerman, who called a hiatus in early February to focus on wellness. That earlier break came after the group’s rise to international fame, with hits like “Gnarly”, “Pinky Up” and “Gabriela”.
HYBE x Geffen, the label overseeing KATSEYE, issued a statement stressing the importance of the artist’s recovery. “We understand how much fans were looking forward to seeing Sophia on stage, but her mental health has to come first,” the statement read.
The label also mentioned that the decision was backed by medical professionals and that Sophia will receive “extended rest and ongoing care” to ensure a full recovery. The group plans to assess her condition coming September.
In a candid Instagram post, Laforteza admitted that “making this decision wasn't easy, but I’m learning that health has to come first.” She promised her fans she would work hard to heal and return stronger.
KATSEYE was founded in 2023 as a six‑member ensemble and quickly earned nominations for two Grammy awards. The latest shift means the group will continue touring and releasing music with four members for the time being.
The move also casts a spotlight on the growing conversation around mental health in the music industry. Many artists are calling for reduced pressures and better support systems to alleviate burnout and anxiety.
While the rest of the band presses on with promotions, fans worldwide have pledged their support, reminding the group that their unity and resilience matter most.
