Leah Stewart’s Courage After a Shark Bite
In June, 35‑year‑old Leah Stewart was attacked by a shark while swimming at Sydney’s Coogee Beach. She sustained dozens of bites across her arms and legs, required several surgeries, and ultimately had one arm amputated.
Following weeks in an induced coma, Stewart is now showing signs of remarkable progress and has begun to regain many of the daily skills she once enjoyed. In a heartfelt online message, she thanked the global fan‑base that raised more than AU$550,000 to aid her treatment and recovery.
She wrote: After months of struggle, I feel I’ve been given a second chance at life and will not waste it. Her gratitude reflects the overwhelming support she has received from family, friends and even strangers.
Australia has seen a surge in shark incidents this year, with four attacks recorded over two days in January alone, including a fatal bite to a 12‑year‑old boy. In May one man was killed while spearfishing in Queensland and another father of two died after a 4‑metre shark struck him in Western Australia.
Sterilised rescue efforts, better safety protocols, and more public awareness may curb future incidents, but for Stewart the immediate focus is on healing and rebuilding a life that could have ended.
