In brief
With over 400,000 followers, Fu Zai, the first police corgi in China, has become an internet icon since his debut as a sniffer dog last fall. While his strong sense of smell has won him praise, his love for food often leads to amusing situations that have caught the attention of social media users.
Fu Zai, a lively corgi with an enormous online following, began his law enforcement career last fall, quickly becoming a staple at the Weifeng Public Security Bureau in Shandong province. Discovered as a puppy with an extraordinary sense of smell, the little dog has won the favor of the public for his playful demeanor and effectiveness as a sniffer dog, although his food-related distractions have also led to his fair share of comedic blunders.Recently, during a street patrol, Fu Zai was caught on video stealing a sausage from a child's hand, showcasing his notorious inability to resist a tasty treat. This amusing moment, far from embarrassing, endeared him further to fans online, leading to an influx of support and even offers of sausages to help him on his next patrol. Despite commendable performance reviews, keeping Fu Zai focused has proven a challenge for his trainer. In a recent incident, some of the corgi's toys and treats were confiscated after he was found snoozing on the job, also using his feeding bowl inappropriately. Experts in dog behavior note that such distractions are common for corgis, who are known for their curious nature and playful spirits."They're easily distracted and have a high prey drive," explains Leonardo Palacio, a dog training specialist. While fans continue to cheer for Fu Zai, it seems the little sniffer dog is a reminder that even in law enforcement, there’s always room for a little humor.
