In brief

Despite his terminal illness, Kim Seongmin, president of Free North Korea Radio, relentlessly fights against the censorship of the North Korean regime by broadcasting critical information to his homeland, revealing the dire consequences of Kim Jong-un's iron grip on power.

For seven years, Kim Seongmin has battled cancer that has spread to multiple organs, receiving a prognosis of mere months to live. Yet, the 62-year-old defector remains fiercely committed to his mission, broadcasting twice daily into North Korea to undermine the regime's control over information. “North Korea is keeping its people like frogs trapped in a deep well,” he reflected in an interview at his home on Ganghwa Island, where he produces content for his station, Free North Korea Radio. His objective is to awaken North Koreans to the flaws in their political system that the government works tirelessly to conceal. For over 20 years, North Korean defectors in South Korea have implemented innovative methods, such as balloon launches and radio broadcasts, to penetrate the walls of censorship enveloping their homeland. However, as tensions rise, Kim Jong-un intensifies repression efforts against “anti-socialist” influences. Recent reports indicate escalated crackdowns, with authorities conducting searches and imposing severe penalties, including public executions, for anyone consuming foreign media or adopting South Korean cultural traits. In this increasingly hostile environment, Kim’s efforts serve as a beacon of opposition, bearing witness to his unwavering commitment to free speech, even as his health deteriorates.
