In brief

Traveling from Cape Town to Pretoria, a reporter reflects on the contrasting worlds of beauty and despair encountered aboard the Blue Train, emphasizing the deep disparities within South Africa.

Chaos enveloped the surroundings as informal porters navigated luggage carts through the bustling crowd. Commuters flooded from the bus terminal to the sidewalks, creating a tableau of travelers seated on their bags while minibus taxis weaved unpredictably through the throng. Our vehicle crept toward a barbed-wire perimeter before arriving at a sliding gate, where the sole barrier between my wife and me and the vacant lot beyond was a vigilant security guard. "Blue Train," I announced, and he waved us through without hesitation.Upon arrival at the Cape Town train station, a blue carpet awaited us, along with two butlers clad in blue vests and white gloves, ready to escort us into a waiting room that promised an experience far more exclusive than the one offered to weary bus passengers. There, we relaxed in plush seating while soft piano melodies played in the background, sampling a lavish spread of fruit, pastries, sandwiches, and bubbling wine.My journey into South Africa’s scenic landscapes began last December, driven by a desire for a splurge on the iconic Blue Train. This journey transforms a straightforward flight from Cape Town to Pretoria into an extraordinary 994-mile experience stretched over two nights, filled with lavish indulgence and awe-inspiring views. With a rich history spanning over a century, the Blue Train encapsulates the essence of luxury. This sense of exclusivity was palpable as we waited in the lounge, serving as a stark contrast to the gritty urban life visible just beyond its walls. The tin shacks lining the outskirts that we’d flown over upon landing remained hidden from view, as did the desperate pleas for assistance echoed by those around us, contrasting sharply with the polished world we had entered amidst the glistening condominiums and upscale eateries.
