Protesters targeted a new multi-million dollar museum in Nigeria, disrupting a preview event scheduled ahead of its grand opening. Videos circulated showing demonstrators insulting foreign guests and demanding their departure from the Museum of West African Art (Mowaa) in Benin City. The museum was intended as a home for the Benin Bronzes, historical artefacts looted by British soldiers in the 19th century, but a bitter dispute over the ownership and display of these artworks has created unrest.

All guests were safely escorted to secure locations, with Mowaa issuing an apology for the incident. Local residents expressed their frustration, viewing the event as a hijacking of a project that should have been for the people of Edo state. The museum's management emphasized its independence, announcing the cancellation of all events leading to the grand opening due to the ongoing tensions. They urged guests to refrain from visiting the campus until a resolution is reached.
