Three female journalists have accused Delhi police of sexual harassment during a protest over the Election Commission’s voter‑roll revision. The women claimed police touched them inappropriately and dragged one by hair, sparking outrage among demonstrators.
The allegations came after police detained scores of youths calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A protest that began in Jantar Mantar, Delhi, drew support from opposition leaders and the anti‑party “Cockroach Janta Party.”
The Election Commission says the revision, known as the Special Intensive Revision, is meant to remove duplicate and ineligible entries, a policy that has already struck off 130 million names. Critics suggest the change favours the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Delhi Police said the complaint was transferred to its crime branch for a ‘fair and impartial’ inquiry. Meanwhile, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi demanded the Home Ministry answers for the police actions.
Video footage shows protestors being physically pulled away from the venue, fueling claims that law‑enforcement tactics were excessively forceful.
