Tragic Collapse in Indonesian School Leaves Three Dead and Many Trapped

Rescuers are racing against time to free students and workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed school building in East Java, Indonesia. The collapse at the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School occurred during prayers, leading to a tragic outcome.

As of Tuesday, three fatalities have been confirmed, with 99 others hospitalized, many suffering critical injuries. The number of trapped individuals is reported to be at least 38, primarily teenage boys, who were present when the two-storey structure gave way.

Officials noted that the building's unstable foundation, worsened by the addition of two unauthorized floors, contributed to this calamitous event. Students aged 12 to 17 attended the school, which specializes in Islamic studies.

The collapse produced a 'pancake-like' structure, complicating rescue efforts. While audio of cries for help can be heard from the debris, fears of further collapses led authorities to temporarily halt rescue operations.

Survivors have begun to share harrowing accounts of their experiences. One seventh-grader, Muhammad Rijalul Qoib, described a chaotic scene during the prayers when the sound of falling debris erupted, prompting him to flee even after being struck by roof fragments.

Families gather at the site awaiting updates, with many expressing hope amid anxiety for their loved ones stuck beneath the rubble. The school’s caretaker has apologized, citing divine will as the cause of this tragic incident. Investigation into the school's expansion permits is currently underway, with concerns raised over the general safety standards within Indonesia's construction sector.
