NASA Names Artemis III Crew, Mission Recasts as Low‑Earth Orbit Test

NASA announced the astronauts that will pilot Artemis III, the agency’s next major Moon‑themed mission. In a surprising turn, the crew will not land on the Moon but will instead stay in low‑Earth orbit, perform docking tests with lunar‑lander prototypes, and return to Earth.

The five‑member team is led by commander Randy Bresnik. Pilot Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency – who has logged more than 300 days in space – will fly alongside U.S. specialists Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio. Bob Heintz, a veteran test pilot, stands ready as backup crew.

The shift from a lunar landing to an orbital test was driven by delays with SpaceX’s Starship, which remains unprepared for a direct Moon launch without an untested in‑orbit refuelling sequence. The failure of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket’s engine test in May further stressed the schedule, as the company lacks a replacement launch pad.

NASA’s Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency remains "committed to helping the Blue team recover" and aims to keep Artemis III on track for a 2027 launch, a year earlier than some experts foresee.

With the United States pressured by geopolitical competition—China aims for a crewed Moon landing by 2030 and the U.S. push for 2028—every year counts. The Orion capsule will fly in low Earth orbit, dock with landers, undock, and return to Earth, setting the stage for Artemis IV, which is slated for an early‑2028 landing, and later Artemis missions that will build lunar infrastructure.

Timing remains tight, especially after the ability to provide necessary cryogenic propellant tests and refuelling remains unproven. NASA’s timeline, however, demonstrates its ambition to maintain a rapid return to the Moon.
