A Michigan defense lawyer is disputing FBI Director Kash Patel’s allegations that his 20-year-old client and four other young suspects were planning to carry out a terror attack on Halloween weekend.

Announcing their arrests on Friday, Patel mentioned that more information would be released soon, however, the FBI and Michigan authorities have provided few specifics about the case. Spokespersons for the state and national FBI and the U.S. Attorney in Detroit had not responded to inquiries by Saturday.

The investigation was reportedly based on discussions in an online chat room involving some of the suspects who were arrested. Two anonymous sources close to the investigation revealed that the group had allegedly talked about executing an attack around Halloween, specifically mentioning “pumpkin day.”

Despite these claims, attorney Amir Makled, who represents one of the detained individuals from Dearborn, stated that federal authorities have not shared many details with him. After reviewing the situation, he concluded that no terror event was planned and does not anticipate any charges being filed.

“I don’t know where this hysteria and this fearmongering came from,” Makled expressed. He described the all-male group of U.S. citizens as gamers, ranging in age from 16 to 20.

Makled posited that if these young men had engaged in discussions on forums that may have been questionable, it would remain to be seen whether any illegal activities occurred. Currently, he doesn't believe the activities they were participating in were unlawful.

After the arrests, authorities stated there’s no continuing threat to public safety. Patel declared on X that “the FBI thwarted a potential terrorist attack” and detained multiple individuals in Michigan who were allegedly scheming a violent offense during the Halloween weekend.

Investigators suspect the plan was influenced by Islamic State group extremism. However, it remains unclear if the suspects had the necessary means to execute an attack. The Halloween reference reportedly prompted the FBI to intervene.

Patel commended the vigilance of the FBI and the collaboration from local law enforcement in averting the incident.

Since the 9/11 terror attacks, the FBI has disrupted several alleged plots through undercover operations where agents pose as terror supporters, providing guidance and resources.
