
FRANKFURT, Germany (26 August 2026) — One airport employee died from malaria after an outbreak of mosquitoes was traced to an arriving aircraft.
Six workers, all male and engaged in different ground‑services roles, contracted the disease within the terminal area. Public health investigators say the mosquitoes likely entered the airport on a flight, a scenario first noted by the Robert Koch Institute earlier this summer.
Fraport, the airport operator, has placed mosquito traps around the tarmac and is sending captured insects to a laboratory for species identification. Simultaneously, medical teams are treating the remaining five infected employees and monitoring their progress.
“We must confirm that one employee has died as a result of the infection,” a Fraport spokesperson told the media. “We have provided comprehensive information to all employees and encourage them to consult a doctor if they experience any symptoms.”
The outbreak is under investigation by the Frankfurt Public Health Department. Blood samples are being analysed to determine whether the infected workers were bitten by a single mosquito or six separate ones.
Malaria in Germany is almost exclusively linked to long‑haul travellers who visited endemic regions. Transmission within German airports is exceptionally rare, but this event demonstrates how vectors can be introduced via international flights.
Despite the disease being preventable and curable, delayed diagnosis can lead to severe outcomes. The last recorded case of airport malaria occurred in 2023 at the same location.
Malaria, transmitted by certain mosquitoes, primarily affects tropical areas. It is not spread person‑to‑person but can result in mild or life‑threatening symptoms if untreated.
