An FBI agent has reportedly been suspended because they refused to participate in a 'perp walk' of the bureau's former director James Comey, US media reports. The agent was suspended for insubordination, according to CBS, after deeming the plan inappropriate.

Comey was indicted in Virginia on two federal charges just days after Donald Trump urged law enforcement to more aggressively investigate political adversaries, including Comey. FBI leadership had suggested sending 'large, beefy' agents in Kevlar vests to escort Comey to his court arraignment in Alexandria next week.

Typically, a 'perp walk' involves law enforcement publicly escorting a person accused of a crime in view of media cameras. This method is common in high-profile cases across the US. Comey is scheduled to appear in court on October 9 to be formally arraigned on charges of lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

He stands accused of misleading a Senate committee in 2020 regarding whether he authorized a leak of classified information to the media. Comey, who led the FBI during a tumultuous period, has denied the allegations and expressed confidence in the federal judicial system.

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. Trump initially fired Comey in 2017 while the bureau was investigating Russian election interference, a probe that later found no coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. The recent charges against Comey were filed just before the five-year statute of limitations would have expired, coinciding with Trump's appointment of a new top prosecutor in the region, Lindsey Halligan, who previously worked as Trump's personal attorney.

Amid escalating political tensions, Trump publicly demanded swift action against Comey and other political figures, declaring the delay was harming the country's reputation. It's still unclear whether the FBI's plans to conduct a 'perp walk' will proceed, as Comey's attorneys are reportedly planning to accompany him to court, a standard practice for non-violent criminal cases. The situation continues to evolve as questions arise about the integrity of the FBI's motives in a politically charged atmosphere.
