Lights Off: Mexican TikTok Influencer Shot Dead While Livestreaming

Local media report that a violent confrontation unfolded in the city of Culiacán on Tuesday evening, resulting in the death of TikTok creator César Gastélum. The influencer, who fashioned daily comedic videos and amassed more than half a million followers, was filming a live broadcast outside a fast‑food restaurant in the Tres Ríos neighborhood when two motorbike riders approached and fired a single shot at close range.

Despite wearing bright orange coats and delivery bags—initially prompting police to misidentify the victim as a parcel courier—the authorities were later alerted to Gastélum’s identity and swiftly cordoned off the area for forensic work. They have examined cartridge casings and pulled surveillance footage from nearby cameras. The motorbike riders, however, have fled, and no arrests have yet been made.

The incident follows a pattern of violence against social‑media personalities in the region, with the 23‑year‑old beauty YouTuber Valeria Márquez having been killed live on TikTok in December 2024. Márquez’s death was linked to an ongoing rivalry between the Los Chapitos and La Mayiza factions of the Sinaloa cartel. Zona Culiacán, the cartel’s power‑center, has seen a surge of violence since that split in September 2024.

Gastélum had previously documented travels, nights out, and luxury car stunts on Instagram. Notably, in a once‑shared post he appeared at the grave of Leobardo Aispuro, a local influencer known as "El Gordo Peruci," who was shot dead in December 2024 as well—potentially pointing to a broader conflict.

The police are currently seeking leads, and the area remains under heightened security with additional forces deployed. The community’s response underscores growing anxieties as a violence‑plagued environment continues to ripple through the country’s digital‑centric generation.
