A US judge has dismissed criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, ruling that the prosecutor who brought the charges was unlawfully appointed.
Judge Cameron Currie stated that Lindsey Halligan, who was chosen by Trump to pursue charges against Comey and James, was not eligible for the role she assumed.
Both Comey and James have consistently maintained their innocence, labeling the charges as politically motivated.
The White House responded to the ruling, stating that the details surrounding the indictments against Comey and James remain unchanged and that this is not the final outcome.
Former President Trump has publicly criticized both Comey and James, calling for justice and claiming their guilt on social media.
In her decision, Judge Currie highlighted that Halligan, who had never prosecuted a case, was unauthorized to present charges to the grand jury, declaring all actions stemming from her appointment as unlawful.
After this dismissal, Comey expressed relief that a prosecution he viewed as malicious had ended, but predicted that Trump would target him again.
He stated, Trump will probably come after me again, reflecting on his past experience of being dismissed from his FBI position while investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Letitia James declared her satisfaction with the ruling, pledging to continue fighting for the people of New York and affirming her belief in the baseless nature of the charges against her.
While the judge dismissed the cases without prejudice, the Justice Department could consider refiling the cases in the future. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated the administration plans to appeal this ruling.
