In brief
On July 3, 2025, Russia officially recognized the Taliban as Afghanistan's legitimate government, a monumental step in the militant group's quest for international engagement after nearly four years of isolation since their power takeover. The announcement came during a meeting in Kabul between Russian Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov and Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, where Zhirnov conveyed Moscow's formal decision to recognize the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.” This recognition is expected to enhance bilateral relations between Russia and Afghanistan, particularly in trade and energy sectors, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
