A court in Kosovo has sentenced two Kosovo Serbs to life imprisonment and another to a 30-year jail term for their participation in what the authorities describe as a 'terrorist' attack in September 2023.

The men, Vladimir Tolić and Blagoj Spasojević, received life sentences, while Dušan Maksimović was handed a 30-year term for violating Kosovo's constitutional order and inciting terrorist activities. The attack, referred to as the 'Banjska incident,' saw a police officer killed and three members of an armed group die during coordinated violence.

Kosovo's acting President Albulena Haxhiu welcomed the verdict, declaring it proof that assaults on the police and the nation's constitutional order will be addressed severely. Despite the convictions, skepticism remains about the motives behind the attack and the involvement of Serbia’s government. Kosovo officials assert that most of the 45 accused are still at large, believed to be based in Serbia, complicating the efforts for justice.

Reports indicate that a blockade set up by armed individuals led to hours of confrontations with police, resulting in tragic casualties on both sides. The shooting started early on September 24, when armed Serbs attacked police near a blockade.

As the situation continues to evolve, questions about the overarching influence of Serbia's government on the attack linger, with Kosovo’s suspects claiming Radoičić did not act with the government’s knowledge.

This incident marks a pivotal point in strained Kosovo-Serbia relations, which have deteriorated in the aftermath of the attack, further complicating EU-mediated negotiations aimed at normalizing relations between the two nations.
