In brief

Yiannis Boutaris’ legacy as a progressive politician and environmental advocate leaves a lasting impact on Greece’s second-largest city and its diverse communities.

Yiannis Boutaris, a pioneering winemaker, staunch animal rights advocate, and former mayor of Thessaloniki, Greece, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was reported on Saturday by the Kir-Yiannis winery, which he established in 1997, although no specific cause of death was disclosed. Boutaris was known for his charismatic and unorthodox style, often characterized by his smoking, tattoos, and distinctive earrings. He rose to prominence as an independent candidate, challenging and breaking a two-decade conservative governance in Thessaloniki during his term from 2011 to 2019. His tenure as mayor was marked by his commitment to fostering dialogue and healing the historical wounds between Thessaloniki's Turkish and Jewish communities. Boutaris famously proclaimed that “Greeks and Turks are siblings,” emphasizing the need for partnership over animosity in the region. In a groundbreaking diplomatic move in 2017, Boutaris extended an invitation to then-Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Thessaloniki, a gesture aimed at easing tensions over naming disputes between the two nations. He often challenged the prevailing narratives of nationalism, asserting that such divisions needed to be overcome for future cooperation. Though he faced criticism and hostility during his mayoralty, Boutaris remained steadfast in his belief that reconciliation and collaboration could pave the way for a peaceful coexistence in a region historically fraught with conflict. His efforts in environmental activism, combined with his remarkable personal journey of recovery from alcoholism, make him a unique figure in the political landscape of Thessaloniki and beyond.
