Jackie the Bald Eagle Dies After Intensive Care

Jackie, a bald eagle in California who gained online fame, died on Monday after receiving weeks of veterinary treatment.

The bird, cared for by the Ojai Raptor Center, was recovering after being attacked by other eagles and was suffering from anemia and weight loss. Despite intensive treatment, her condition worsened according to the center.

“Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists,” the Ojai Raptor Center said.

Jackie’s life was tracked by the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, part of the Friends of Big Bear Valley nonprofit. The livestream attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers and followed Jackie and her partner, Shadow, who have been mates since 2018.

The center expressed deep sorrow, stating it was “an extraordinary privilege to care for her” and noting the support from viewers worldwide. They are collaborating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Remains have been transferred to the state agency for further analysis.
