In a sharp escalation, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, announced a zero‑tolerance stance against kites and balloons allegedly launched from Gaza, declaring that any such incursions would prompt forceful retaliation. The kites, found in communities near the border, were stripped of explosives and did not pose a threat, yet the Israeli military still views them as potential drones. Hamas denies responsibility, claiming the devices are merely children’s toys from displacement camps, and accuses Israel of using them as a pretext for continued attacks following a ceasefire. The latest flare‑up comes amid mounting casualties, as Israeli air strikes in northern Gaza have already killed dozens and the region faces a severe humanitarian crisis.

Israel has warned Hamas that it will step up strikes on Gaza following concerns over kite, drone and balloon launches from the territory. The warning came after several kites—none of which carried explosives—were discovered at an Israeli community near the Gaza border over the weekend.

"Forceful actions will be taken to put an end to this phenomenon," Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Monday. He added that any balloon will be treated like a kite and any kite like a drone, regardless of whether explosives are involved.

The Israeli military, citing sources, believes Hamas is behind the kites and that they may be intended to test Israel’s response. Although the kites posed no direct threat, the war‑zone atmosphere has heightened tensions in the communities where they were found, notably Kibbutz Nahal Oz, situated only 800 metres from the Gaza border.

Hamas dismissed the accusations, arguing that the kites are simply children’s toys from displacement camps. The group condemned what it said were fabricated pretexts used to justify the continuation of aggression against its people.

In the meantime, the conflict shows no indication of easing. Israeli forces carried out air strikes in central Gaza on Sunday, killing two people and injuring seven in Nuseirat refugee camp and al‑Zawayda village. A four‑year‑old boy was killed when a building in the north of Maghazi was bombed, and senior Hamas personnel have been targeted in retaliation against the initial Gaza attack in October 2023.

With peace talks stalled and civilian casualties mounting, the latest kite incidents may only exacerbate a volatile situation where every new event can trigger immediate military escalation. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for multiple divergent outcomes depending on how both sides assess the threat levels and coordinate responses across timelines.
