During a recent House GOP gathering at the Kennedy Center, President Donald Trump revealed that Indiana U.S. Representative Jim Baird and his wife are currently hospitalized following a car accident.

They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly, Trump stated. He’s going to be fine. She’s going to be fine. Baird has represented West Central Indiana since his election in 2019 and is 80 years old.

As details about the accident remain sparse, a spokesperson for Baird’s congressional office was unable to provide immediate comment.

This unfortunate news arrives amid a period of mourning for the Republican Party, following the death of seven-term U.S. Representative Doug LaMalfa from California. Additionally, the resignation of Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene has further tightened the party's foothold in the House, now standing at 218 seats against 213 held by Democrats.

It is worth noting that tragic car accidents have impacted Indiana's congressional delegation previously; in 2022, Republican Jackie Walorski lost her life in a vehicle collision that also claimed the lives of two staffers and the other driver.
