A youth‑led movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party is demanding education reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Modi’s minister; protests continue amid a police crackdown.

Tens of thousands of supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) remain in a sit‑in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar after the police used batons, tear gas and lathi charges to disperse them. The movement, sparked by comments from India’s chief justice, has drawn from students, activists like Sonam Wangchuk and senior political figures such as Rahul Gandhi. In response to the violence, Congress leaders staged a march outside Modi’s residence demanding the minister’s resignation. The government has condemned the opposition’s tactics while pledging reforms for education and accountability.

Pressure has been mounting on India’s government as thousands of supporters of the satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) keep marching in Delhi, even in heavy rain.

The youth‑led movement, calling for reforms of the education system and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, entered the scene after the chief justice referred to unemployed young people as “cockroaches” in a speech that sparked outrage and protest.

On Monday a massive demonstration at Jantar Mantar escalated into a clash with the police; at least 60 people were injured after batons and tear gas were released. Officers dismantled the makeshift stage and tents, but demonstrators refused to leave, maintaining a 24‑hour sit‑in that has weathered several days of hardship.

In the wake of the crackdown, the main opposition party, Congress, staged a surprise protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s house, led by Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders. They demanded the resignation of Pradhan and Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the government of exploiting students for political spectacle.

Gandhi, who was dragged by the police into a bus, said the continuation of the protest was a sign that the government was unwilling to engage in a substantive debate. Congress MPs claimed they had been invited for discussion but were blocked, further deepening the political crisis.

Educational activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest on 28 June, initiating an indefinite hunger strike in support of the movement. He was forcibly removed by the police and is continuing his fast in hospital.

The CJP has grown into one of the most visible expressions of public dissent in recent Indian politics, with protests unfolding in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad as well as the capital.

While the government emphasizes reforms and accountability, opposition leaders tout the need for a debate and accuse ministers of turning education policy into a political show. The next steps will determine whether the demands for a minister’s resignation and a broader overhaul of the system can change the trajectory of the current administration.
