Guinean Waste Site Collapse Claims 30 Lives

Conakry, 23 August 2026 – At least 30 people were killed when a towering mound of rubbish at the city’s main waste dump collapsed onto neighbouring homes following overnight heavy rain. The event also injured 22 others, with six sustaining serious injuries.

The local government mobilised significant resources and personnel, including the military, to search for survivors at approximately 02:00 local time. Rescue crews were seen using excavators to sift through the collapsed mound as residents gathered nearby.

One resident told reporters that all five of her children had perished in the disaster, and officials warned that the death toll could rise if more bodies are uncovered beneath the rubble.

Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah personally visited the site to assess the situation and oversee the recovery operation. Nearby neighbourhood leader Lancine Sylla, citing earlier fears of a heavy casualty count, reported that 18 bodies had been extracted to the morgue.

This tragedy is part of a series of hazards at the site, which previously caused a landslide that killed 10 people in 2017.
