Glutathione: Firefighters’ Hope or Unproven Rescue? Union Cuts Warning


After the devastating Eaton Fire in California’s Los Angeles county, two veteran firefighters found an unexpected relief in a controversial antioxidant, glutathione. A 25‑year‑old fire captain, David Marquez, reported that a single inhalation of the compound, administered outside the Rose Bowl stadium, made him feel “much better immediately” after suffering chronic cough, headache, and fatigue from the blaze.


Glutathione, naturally produced by the body, has begun to appear in volunteer clinics across major Wildfire states, including Washington and California, where it is offered to firefighters as a quick decontamination method. In some cases, the treatment is claimed to flush out harmful chemicals inhaled during fires, the proponents say.


Despite anecdotal chatter of symptom relief, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) issued a stark warning last month after two compounding pharmacies pulled doses of the antioxidant from the market due to contaminants. The union also cited recent studies that found other natural vitamins can increase cancer risk, casting doubt on glutathione’s benefits.


“We don’t know if glutathione is effective,” said Sean DeCrane, IAFF’s assistant for health and safety. “We don’t know the long‑term effects of this type of treatment,” he added. He further criticised how the treatment was marketed to crews, pointing out that it was sometimes suggested as standard care during briefings.


A leading naturopathic group, the Integrated Health Action Network (IHAN), now uses glutathione in response to wildfire events, citing improvements in headaches, fatigue, and brain fog. Co‑founder Jen Riegle cautions that their data is anecdotal and not a replacement for controlled clinical trials.


Occupational health scholars, such as Dr. Coralynn Sack of the University of Washington, note the lack of laboratory evidence for glutathione’s effectiveness. She stated, “There is biological plausibility, but we’re very underwhelmed by the data that exists.”


The debate cuts right across a wider conversation about the laziness of protective gear provision. Washington’s National Forest Service long banned face masks for practical reasons, but the growing consensus is clear: if anything, the environment demands consistent respiratory protection followed by systems that decontaminate gear instead of leaving toxins on helmets and jackets.


A firefighter from West Sacramento, Greg Fonts, says younger crew members now weigh the risks far more critically as they learn about the disease burden – a stark shift from the era of “cancer is just part of the job.” He stresses the importance of evidence‑based interventions.


Firefighters who have returned to normalcy after glutathione treatments may be an inspiration for researchers, but the debate illustrates the balancing act between promising, untested treatments and the established science of medical safety. Until thorough randomized trials prove safe and effective, the union’s caution should remain a cornerstone of firefighter health policy.
