Ghana mourns its tallest man - a generous and popular giant

Sulemana Abdul Samed, known locally as Awuche, passed away at 33 in Tamale Hospital after a battle with a serious leg infection that had been linked to his condition. He had been diagnosed with gigantism in his twenties and later discovered to have Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissue.

Standing 7‑ft‑4‑in (223 cm) tall, the man was measured by the BBC in late December 2022, confirming him as the nation’s tallest. His height made him a local celebrity, particularly in his home village of Gambaga where he drew crowds whenever he visited. He was remembered for his generous spirit and gentle nature; relatives noted that people continue to come to his home to discuss his untimely death.

Awuche’s health struggles included sores on his legs that turned infected, leading to hospitalization. He had also faced financial hardships, but recently received support from Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of former president John Mahama, who offered to cover his medical bills at Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Despite the challenges, the late giant maintained a positive outlook and enjoyed his celebrity status. His family decided that his burial would take place in Tamale rather than Gambaga, as the village would be overwhelmed by mourners.
