In brief

Norberg-Hodge's organization, Local Futures, seeks to promote community-driven solutions to global trade challenges.

Helena Norberg-Hodge, a pioneering Swedish linguist and filmmaker, first explored Ladakh in 1975, captivated by its culture and people. However, with the advent of global trade, she observed a troubling transformation: rising unemployment, poverty, pollution, and social fragmentation. These issues, which she initially witnessed in a remote Himalayan region, prompted her to establish Local Futures, an organization intent on reversing harmful economic trends and fostering local resilience in the face of climate change. In a recent video interview, the 78-year-old activist elaborated on the detrimental effects of the global trade system on both the environment and mental health. She highlighted how extensive food transportation contributes to significant carbon emissions while promoting harmful monocultures. "Monoculture is ecocidal," Norberg-Hodge stated. "It requires vast amounts of chemicals and technology, leading to toxic environments that degrade the soil."Norberg-Hodge's commitment to localism is rooted in the belief that empowering communities can yield stronger economies and healthier ecosystems. By prioritizing localization, she aims to diminish the negative repercussions of global trade and foster a more sustainable future for communities worldwide.
