Family Evacuates Just Before Colombia Earthquake – A First‑hand Video
A striking video shows a Colombian family racing from their home as a 7.4‑meter quake begins to shake the region. Liliana Pérez Ocampo and her four family members were seen fleeing the house moments before the ground shook violently, a scene captured live by the mother and posted to the BBC World Service.
The footage began with a mild tremor; when the shaking intensified after about 30 seconds, the family broke into a panic and left in a hurry. The mother added, “At first, we thought it was just a mild tremor like the ones that usually happen in Colombia. When more than 30 seconds passed and everything was shaking harder, I realised it was an earthquake.”
Both parents and two small children were at school at the time, and the family confirmed that everyone is safe. “In the end, material things can be replaced,” the mother explained. “The most important thing is life, and we have that.”
The event is one of the most devastating earthquakes Colombia has experienced since 2000, with over 169 fatalities reported by the national geological service.
