A 27‑year‑old man was arrested after stabbing two worshippers inside Edmonton’s Nanaksar Gurdwara early Friday morning.
Police said the attack took place at around 05:00 local time, with the suspect confronting staff as he attempted entry to the prayer hall. The confrontation escalated, and two male devotees—aged 75 and 51—were stabbed but are now in stable condition. A quick‑acting bystander quickly detained the assailant before authorities could intervene.
The suspect, known to police, had an extensive criminal history dating back to 2015. He was released from a federal prison in Alberta the day before the attack and failed to report to his Edmonton halfway house—contributing to the swift arrest.
Police are still investigating whether a hateful ideology motivated the stabbing. Chief Warren Driechel urged the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds, noting the growing concern over hate crimes driven by geopolitical tensions.
The World Sikh Organization called the incident deeply troubling, citing a rise in anti‑Sikh hate across Canada. They reported that a copy of the Sikh scripture inside the temple was also desecrated, a claim police are looking into. The gurdwara remains closed to the public while investigators work.
Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas condemned the earlier threats to temples in the city, describing them as "utterly disgusting" and reaffirming the open‑door ethos of gurdwaras.
