In brief
Narges Mohammadi has been temporarily released from prison for 21 days following a crucial surgical procedure, facing ongoing health challenges during her incarceration in Iran.
Iran's human rights activist and Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi has been granted a 21-day temporary release from prison to recuperate after undergoing surgery for a suspected cancerous lesion on her leg. The Narges Foundation confirmed that her lawyers had persistently requested the furlough, emphasizing the urgency for medical care following her health decline. In a show of support, fellow inmates had staged a hunger strike to advocate for her release. Upon her return to prison, Mohammadi's sentence is set to be extended by 21 days in light of her absence. The foundation and her family had sought a medical furlough, which would have accounted for her time away, but this was not realized. Currently 52 years old, Mohammadi is serving time in Tehran’s prison due to a conviction for allegations pertaining to "spreading anti-state propaganda," primarily based on her extensive criticisms regarding the Iranian government and laws that oppress women's rights. Her health continues to decline as documented by the foundation, which noted that she suffered multiple heart attacks in 2022. Narges Mohammadi was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, a distinction she received while behind bars. Her children accepted the prestigious award in her stead during a ceremony in Oslo.
