Brad Karp, chairman of one of the country’s most prestigious law firms, has resigned from his position after the release of emails revealing his exchanges with Jeffrey Epstein, a high-profile departure in the fallout among those with ties to the late convicted sex offender.

A statement from Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Garrison & Wharton did not explicitly mention any connection Karp had with Epstein, but Karp, who has served as chairman since 2008, stated that recent reporting had created a distraction that was not in the best interests of the firm.

Last week, the Department of Justice released a large batch of documents from its investigation into Epstein, detailing his sexual abuse of young girls and his relationships with powerful individuals.

Notably, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify before a House committee investigating Epstein, following Republican calls for contempt of Congress charges against them. Both Clinton and Donald Trump had documented associations with Epstein, though neither has been accused of wrongdoing.

The fallout has extended beyond U.S. borders, with a top official in Slovakia resigning after pictures and emails surfaced of him meeting with Epstein after his prison release. Additionally, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized for appointing an ambassador with ties to Epstein.

Among the newly released documents was a 2015 email in which Karp thanked Epstein for hosting a memorable event, indicating a more personal rapport between the two men. Epstein had responded that he welcomed Karp and would continue to invite him to future events.

Throughout the years, Karp’s communications with Epstein included several personal and professional exchanges, such as seeking advice for individuals caught in various legal troubles stemming from Epstein’s past dealings.

Paul Weiss has been positioned in a difficult space due to ongoing tensions with the Trump administration after the firm advised on investigations against Trump, leading to threats of suspension of security clearances for its lawyers.

As the narrative around Epstein and his connections continues to develop, Karp's resignation reflects the broader scrutiny faced by figures connected to his influence.
