President Joe Biden blasts Donald Trump’s ‘vanity projects’, calls him a loser at fundraising gala
On Saturday, former President Joe Biden seized the spotlight at a Democratic Party fundraiser in Hanover, Maryland, launching a harsh critique of Donald Trump’s supposed ‘vanity projects’ and dubbing him a loser.
In a 10‑minute set, Biden attacked Trump’s plan to demolish the East Wing of the White House to create a new ballroom, his attempt to name the Kennedy Center after himself, and the $14.7 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. “It’s not just his vanity projects, tearing down the East Wing of the White House making room for his ballroom, putting his name on the Kennedy Center, building an arch in his own honour, even hiring his own pool guy to fix the Reflecting Pool,” Biden said before adding, “Woah! What a loser.”
Trump has repeatedly criticized Biden’s performance while in office, and Biden has responded in kind. The former president has denied completing the ballroom, claiming the $400 million project is necessary for national security and to host state guests. The renovation of the reflecting pool sparked its own controversy; the pool later suffered from algae growth, a problem Trump and the US National Parks Service blamed on vandalism.
Biden also denounced Trump’s defense of his supporters who stormed the US Capitol building in 2021. He said, “What makes me angry is that Trump wants to give taxpayers’ money, your money, to the January 6th insurrectionists.” This referred to a proposal to compensate individuals who claimed they were unfairly targeted by the government, which was later blocked by a judge.
Trump has not directly answered Biden’s comments, but on his Truth Social platform he called Biden a crooked politician and continued to use the nickname “sleepy Joe” in unrelated posts. Biden’s remarks come exactly two years after a disastrous debate performance against Trump preceding the 2024 presidential election, a result that led some Democrats to call for his withdrawal from the race and prompted Vice‑President Kamala Harris to replace him in the nomination contest.
