In brief

Israeli authorities have apprehended seven individuals linked to an alleged Iranian-backed assassination plot aimed at a senior scientist and a city mayor in Jerusalem, further escalating tensions amid ongoing Middle East conflicts.

Israeli police and Shin Bet, Israel's security agency, announced on Tuesday the arrest of seven men from the predominantly Arab neighborhood of Beit Safafa in East Jerusalem. The group reportedly conspired to assassinate a senior Israeli scientist and the mayor of a large Israeli city on behalf of Iran. While the identities of the targets were not disclosed, authorities described the suspects as residents of Israel who had been captured in recent weeks and have yet to face formal charges.According to the statement released by the Israeli authorities, some suspects had taken surveillance photographs of the scientist's residence and were prepping for the assassination attempts, which included plans to detonate a police vehicle and launch a grenade assault on a house. They were allegedly offered a total of around $50,000 for these activities. Additionally, the report indicated that a 23-year-old Israeli citizen was pivotal in recruiting the others for the plot, directing them to carry out acts of vandalism, such as graffiti and arson, while gathering intelligence on both targets. These arrests followed the dismantling of another Israeli spy network of Jewish citizens accused of gathering intelligence for Iran. The recent disclosures come at a time of heightened tension between Israel and Iran, particularly after a drone and missile strike against Israel earlier this month prompted the Israeli government to vow retaliation. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Iranian state media has remained silent on the matter, with no official responses to the accusations regarding the assassination and espionage attempts. The Beit Safafa neighborhood, where the suspects lived, represents the intricate situation in East Jerusalem, an area that bears the burden of significant political and territorial disputes. Captured by Israel from Jordan in 1967, the region has seen a complex struggle for identity and governance, with many Palestinian residents aspiring for East Jerusalem to serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state. In a further escalation of the situation, Israeli police also indicted a man planning to assault a demonstration supporting hostages in Gaza, indicating a wider context of unrest and retaliatory actions in the region.
