Renowned Nepali‑born climber and former British Army Special Boat Service member Nirmal Purja was among those killed in a fatal avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak, echoing the tragedy to mountaineering communities worldwide. The expedition, managed by Elite Expeditions, confirmed Purja’s death on Thursday via a statement on social media, expressing profound sadness and heartbreak. The announcement also confirmed that all nine other members of the expedition perished, raising the death toll for the expedition to ten.
Pakistani authorities had previously reported the recovery of the bodies of ten climbers from the 10‑person team, including American Mallory Geis, Oman’s Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, and Nepali Pur Bahadur Gurung. The same teamwork collective, led by Purja’s command, was conducting a summit bid on Broad Peak—a 26,400‑ft (8,047‑m) mountain within the Karakoram range—which had been climbed successfully only once in 1957.
Purja first rose to international prominence with a 2021 Netflix documentary, 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, which chronicled his rapid ascent of all 14 of the world's highest peaks within six months in 2019. The avalanche that claimed the expedition occurred on Thursday, the same day the mountain’s dangerous weather patterns intensified.
The Nepalese government’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah also confirmed all ten deaths on social media, stating: “The tragic death of six Nepalese and four other foreign climbers, including world record holder Nirmal Purja, in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan, has shocked us.” He added that the climbers’ courage and dedication would always remain inspiring.
Rescue teams in Pakistan were already searching the 8,047‑m summit when the avalanche struck, further demonstrating the extreme dangers posed by High‑Altitude mountaineering on Broad Peak, one of the most challenging peaks after its first successful ascent by an Austrian team in 1957.
