A night collapse of a garbage mound in Guinea’s capital has killed over 30 people, with dozens injured and ongoing rescue efforts.

A heavy rain‑triggered collapse of a massive rubbish heap in Conakry, Guinea, left more than 30 dead and 22 injured, prompting a wide‑scale rescue operation backed by the military. First responders have recovered 18 bodies, but officials fear the death toll may climb further as more residents are trapped beneath the debris. Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the site to oversee searches, while local leaders highlighted the disaster’s severity. The incident marks a grim recurrence, following a similar landfill landslide that killed 10 people in 2017.

At least 30 people have died when a large mound of waste at a major landfill in Conakry collapsed onto nearby homes. Heavy rains overnight compromised the site’s stability, causing the heap to slide down and crush multiple residences in the Dar‑es‑Salam area.

A total of 22 residents were injured, six of them suffering serious injuries. Security forces and the military have been deployed to aid search and rescue operations, working around the clock to locate survivors trapped beneath the debris.

Officials say that 18 bodies have already been retrieved and transported to the morgue. A local neighbourhood leader expressed grave concerns that the death toll could rise as rescue teams investigate the collapsed rubbish.

The prime minister visited the scene to assess the damage and oversee remaining rescue efforts. He was accompanied by local officials, who highlighted the region’s vulnerability to similar incidents. A previous landfill landslide in 2017 killed 10 people at the same site.
