A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly car bomb attack that killed eight people and wounded 20 others in Delhi last week, authorities have said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said the car used in the attack, which the government has called a terrorist incident, was registered in the arrested suspect's name.

They have accused him of conspiring with the alleged suicide bomber, who is said to be a resident of Indian-administered Kashmir.

The explosion occurred near a metro station close to the historic Red Fort, one of Delhi's key landmarks.

The Agency has seized another vehicle allegedly belonging to the suicide bomber for further investigation. So far, 73 witnesses have been interrogated, including individuals injured in the incident.

The attack took place at 18:52 local time when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a busy traffic light and then detonated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the attack a conspiracy and vowed to hold accountable those responsible, including their partners and sponsors.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling the losses heartbreaking.

Authorities are also investigating any possible links to recent arrests in Kashmir and the seizure of explosives from a suburb in Delhi.

The Red Fort, a major tourist attraction since its construction in the 17th Century, is traditionally where Indian prime ministers deliver their annual Independence Day addresses.
