Eight days before President Donald Trump’s planned fundraising dinner, Los Angeles authorities arrested a suspect who was armed with a handgun and prohibited ammunition near the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes.
The man, 38‑year‑old Jeanine John Taele, was found carrying a loaded pistol and a 16‑round magazine filled with hollow‑point bullets, which are banned in California. He was also linked to a robbery in El Segundo, the sheriff’s department said.
Investigators say Taele spent the afternoon walking the golf course grounds taking photos and videos while monitoring security‑planning activity. Plain‑clothes federal agents reported him as suspicious, leading to his arrest around 1530 ET.
Following the arrest, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau raided Taele’s home in Downey. Authority officers uncovered an illegally modified AR‑platform rifle, a .45 pistol, body armour and a cache of high‑capacity magazines and pistol bullets, as well as notebooks containing concerning statements.
While authorities have not identified any credible threat to the President or to any community, the incident has prompted the Secret Service to review its protocols ahead of the president’s appearance. No charges yet relate to an intent to harm Trump.
Trump’s visit to California is part of a series of campaign stops ahead of the mid‑term elections, amid growing tensions between his administration and California Governor Gavin Newsom over future political aspirations.
