In brief
The plight of migrants in North Africa has worsened with countries like Libya conducting mass deportations of sub-Saharan Africans, supported by EU funds aimed at curbing migration. Reports highlight gruesome experiences during their detainment, as well as increasing anti-migrant sentiments in Europe.
In January 2025, over 600 men from Niger found themselves forcibly returned from Libya, a stark reminder of the growing repression against migrants aiming to reach Europe. The journey many undertake across the Sahara often culminates in unimaginable hardships, and this recent expulsion epitomizes the harsh reality faced by sub-Saharan Africans. The mass deportation by Libyan authorities marks one of the largest in years, reflecting a broader crackdown orchestrated by North African nations. Funded by the European Union to mitigate migration, these countries are employing increasingly severe measures against would-be migrants desperate to escape difficult living conditions. Many of these men, who initially sought refuge in Libya believing it would be a launching pad towards Europe, faced brutality and dehumanization instead.Upon their return to Niger, the deportees arrived in poor conditions—hungry, disheveled, and traumatized from their ordeal. Salmana Issoufou, an 18-year-old among the deportees, candidly described his eight months in detention where he suffered beatings from prison guards. Tragically, two detainees lost their lives soon after reaching Niger. As Europe grapples with rising anti-migrant sentiments, the consequences are being felt further south. Countries like Tunisia, Morocco, and Mauritania have started similar measures, following bilateral agreements with the EU promising financial backing in exchange for controlling migration flows. Recent data from Frontex indicates a significant decline in illegal border crossings, a statistic credited to the aggressive tactics employed by North African governments. These developments highlight a grim reality for many migrants, with numerous individuals caught in a deadly cycle of hope and despair, where the quest for a better life is met with violence and mistreatment.
