In brief
With the clock turning back this Sunday, many reflect on the opportunity to seize an hour that could redefine their routines, ambitions, and self-care practices.
As the sun begins its retreat earlier in the evening, we are presented with the annual transition of daylight saving time, where we gain that extra hour back. With this shift comes a palpable desire to be productive, to capitalize on that seemingly gift-wrapped morsel of time. The reality check, however, tends to show that our hopeful intentions often fall short. Each year, this ritual prompts visions of becoming a more accomplished version of ourselves. Imagine rising an hour earlier to embrace activities like meditation or exercise, perhaps preparing a glorious breakfast or even taking the dog for a brisk morning walk— a fantasy I entertain each November first. Yet, as with each passing year, the allure of an additional hour in bed holds sway, luring me into a cozy cocoon of comfort instead of action. This winter, as daylight fades faster, every hour takes on a new importance, urging us to fill our days with purpose and intention. Just as we remind ourselves to change the batteries in our smoke detectors during this time change, we might consider establishing new routines or nurturing neglected hobbies. What if we made a list of gratitude for how we could best utilize that hour? Perhaps a commitment to tackle one of our aspirational goals daily until the spring return of our lost hour? However, there’s also wisdom in the art of indulgence. Why not luxuriate in that hour freely, tempting ourselves to savor its quiet stillness? One innovative suggestion I had received was to hold off on resetting the clock until a desired moment repeats itself—be it relishing a leisurely brunch or allowing for a blissful afternoon nap.As we navigate the transition into a season filled with less light and warmth, it’s worth pondering how we will embrace this extra hour, turning a simple clock adjustment into an opportunity for transformation and reflection.
