In brief
In the Kharkiv region, a former celebrity chef has shifted his focus from cooking shows to the front lines, providing essential support to soldiers through nourishing meals.
In the heart of Ukraine’s ongoing conflict, cooking for troops stationed on the front lines poses significant challenges. Recently, a Russian artillery strike shattered the windows and glass door of a military kitchen in eastern Ukraine. Despite this, Pvt. Yaroslav Breus and his team swiftly repaired the damage and continued their important task: feeding the soldiers. “Given our circumstances, this meal could very well be the last,” Breus remarked as he prepared pork steaks, along with a traditional borscht, for several hundred hungry troops, surrounded by massive pots and sizzling pans.On the menu was a delightful beetroot salad enriched with roasted walnuts and classic boiled potatoes topped with butter and parsley, offering a taste of home even amidst turmoil. The First Assault Battalion of the Third Assault Brigade finds itself fortunate; the food prepared by Private Breus—a former chef at the prestigious Veranda restaurant in Kyiv and a contestant on the Ukrainian edition of “MasterChef”—allows the soldiers to enjoy hearty meals despite relentless Russian attacks and adverse conditions that define their day-to-day lives.
