EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Fire crews were engaged in a fierce battle against massive flames at a Chevron refinery situated just outside of Los Angeles on Thursday night. The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed via the social platform X that the major fire had erupted at the El Segundo facility. At this time, the company has not responded to requests for further information, and local police and fire departments opted to refrain from commenting on the ongoing situation.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and it's unclear whether there were any injuries associated with the incident. Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety, Newsom’s office stated.

El Segundo, located approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Los Angeles, is a beachside city close to the Los Angeles International Airport. The Chevron refinery has been operational since 1911, as noted on the company’s official website.
